What EMT candidates need to do before attempt four
If you have failed the NREMT EMT exam three times, you must complete remedial education before taking the exam a fourth time.
Need to complete your EMT remediation?
CE Solutions offers a 24-hour online NREMT Remedial Program for $219. Courses are available on demand, so you can complete the required education around your schedule.
Can You Retake the NREMT After 3 Failed Attempts?
Yes. Three unsuccessful attempts do not automatically end your path toward EMT certification.
Eligible EMT candidates may receive up to six examination attempts. After the third unsuccessful attempt, however, you must complete accepted remedial education before continuing to attempt four.
When you apply for your fourth attempt, you will upload documentation showing that you completed the required education. Once the National Registry approves your application, it can issue a new Authorization to Test.
What to Do Before Your Fourth NREMT Attempt
- Review your NREMT account. Confirm your examination history, remaining attempts, and original course-completion eligibility period.
- Complete accepted remedial education. Choose an educational pathway that satisfies National Registry and applicable state requirements.
- Save your completion documentation. You will need proof of your remedial training when applying again.
- Submit a new application. Upload your remedial education documentation with your fourth-attempt application and pay the applicable examination fee.
- Schedule after approval. Once your application is approved and a new ATT is issued, schedule your examination.
How Long Must You Wait to Retake the NREMT?
The National Registry requires a 15-day waiting period between examination attempts.
You may begin a new application after your results are posted, but you cannot take the examination again until the waiting period has passed. Completing remedial education does not remove this waiting period.
What Counts as NREMT EMT Remedial Training?
The National Registry currently identifies several ways EMT candidates may satisfy the remedial education requirement.
- Completion of the 20-credit EMT National Component of the NCCP model.
- Completion of a state- or CAPCE-approved EMT refresher course.
- Completion of qualifying education through an approved education program.
Qualifying online education may be accepted when it is CAPCE- or state-approved. Some states have additional rules or require a traditional refresher course.
Check with your State EMS Office before enrolling if you are unsure which option applies to you. You can also review the current requirements in the NREMT EMT Candidate Handbook.

Prepare Differently for Your Fourth Attempt
Remedial education is an opportunity to identify what has been holding you back and change how you prepare.
Use Your Previous Results
Review the information available in your NREMT account after your unsuccessful attempt. Use it to identify subjects that need more attention during your remedial coursework.
Explain the Reasoning Behind Each Answer
Do not stop after selecting an answer. Explain why it is the best choice and why the other options are less appropriate. If you answered correctly by guessing, add that topic to your review list.
Practice Identifying the Next Priority
Many EMT exam questions ask you to identify the most appropriate next action. Practice recognizing immediate threats, separating useful information from distractions, and choosing the next step within the EMT scope of practice.
Build a Consistent Schedule
Plan manageable study sessions instead of relying on last-minute cramming. Give yourself enough time to revisit earlier topics and ask for help when a concept remains unclear.
