The requirement

The exam Texas requires before you can recertify

Texas DSHS requires every certified or licensed EMS provider to complete an approved jurisprudence exam before they submit a recertification or renewal application. It applies at every level, and to out-of-state providers coming in on reciprocity. Our course covers the material and gives you a completion certificate to keep for your records and your renewal.

Questions providers ask

Texas EMS jurisprudence

Who has to take the Texas EMS jurisprudence exam?

Every certified or licensed EMS provider in Texas, at any level (ECA, EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic), has to complete a DSHS-approved jurisprudence exam before submitting a recertification or renewal application. Out-of-state providers coming in on reciprocity need it too.

How often do I need to take it?

Once per recertification cycle, before your certification expires. A course you passed last cycle does not carry over to the next one.

Can I recertify without it?

No. Since 2017, every Texas EMS provider has to complete the jurisprudence exam before applying for recertification. Leaving it off the application is one of the most common reasons a recert gets kicked back.

What does the exam cover?

The Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 773 and the Texas Administrative Code Chapter 157. That includes minimum standards, certification and recertification rules, continuing education requirements, disciplinary actions, and the responsibilities of EMS providers and personnel.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

The course is $25. It is online and self-paced, and most providers finish in about two hours. Your certificate is ready as soon as you pass.

Can I sign up for only the jurisprudence course?

Yes. You can enroll in the jurisprudence course on its own, whether you just need this requirement or you are completing it for Texas reciprocity.
