Who needs the TCFP injury report CE
TCFP requires at least 18 hours of continuing education each certification period, and two of those hours must be a review of the most recent TCFP injury report, focused on the top three leading causes of injuries.
That applies whether your department renews you or you renew on your own. TCFP says all certificates expire on October 31 each year.
How it fits into your hours

What is the TCFP injury report?
The TCFP Injury Report is the Texas Commission on Fire Protection's annual summary of firefighter injuries, exposures, illnesses, cancer diagnoses, and suicides reported by Texas fire departments. Each report ends with TCFP's recommendations for reducing firefighter injuries.
Texas Government Code §419.048 charges TCFP with gathering and evaluating injury data, and 37 TAC §435.23 requires regulated departments to report injuries. The program began in March 2010. In 2025, only 20 of 884 regulated departments did not use the reporting system, a 98% reporting rate.

What the 2025 TCFP Injury Report shows
The 2025 report covers everything reported to TCFP during calendar year 2025, and it is the version most firefighters need this year. Here is a closer look at the numbers the course walks you through.
Leading injury types in 2025
The rule asks you to focus on the top three. Skeletal injuries, such as strains, sprains, and bone injuries, have been the largest category every year since 2021.

More injuries happened off the emergency scene than on it. Training, station duties, and fitness together accounted for 1,820 injuries in 2025, compared with 1,706 on emergency scenes. Injured firefighters transported to a hospital also rose to 547, up from 319 in 2024.

Which year's injury report do I need?
The rule requires a review of the most recent TCFP injury report for your certification period. For the period ending October 31, 2026, that is the 2025 Injury Report. If you are completing an earlier period, use the year table to pick the matching course.
Why would I need an older injury report course?
If you are completing CE for a past certification period, such as renewing a lapsed certificate or filling a gap in department records, take the report that applied to that period. TCFP says certificates must be renewed within one year of the expiration date. We offer the 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 versions.
When is the TCFP injury report CE due?
TCFP certificates expire on October 31 each year, so complete your injury report CE and the rest of your hours before that date.
How long does the course take, and how much does it cost?
The course is 2 hours and costs $25. It is online and self-paced, so you can start and stop as your schedule allows.
Does it count toward my 18 or 20 hours?
Yes. Under §441.5(b), two of the minimum 18 hours must be the injury report review. Individual certificate holders need 20 total hours, and the injury report review is part of that total.
Do I send my certificate to TCFP?
If you renew as an individual, TCFP asks you not to send CE records unless it requests them. Keep your certificate on file, since CE can be audited for up to three years after renewal. If you work for a regulated department, give it to your department, which keeps your records.
Is this the same as reporting an injury to TCFP?
No. Departments report injuries to TCFP through its online FIDO system, as required by 37 TAC §435.23. The injury report CE is the training where firefighters review what those reports showed.
