Pennsylvania EMS Recertification Requirements
Hours, EMSVO requirements, and renewal information for Pennsylvania EMSVOs, EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics
Pennsylvania EMS recertification works on a state-only path. The state does not require you to maintain NREMT certification. Pennsylvania has its own hour requirements that differ from the NREMT model, and includes a unique certification for Emergency Medical Services Vehicle Operators (EMSVO) with separate CE requirements.
Here’s the full breakdown of Pennsylvania EMS recertification requirements.
Pennsylvania EMS Hour Requirements by Certification Level
or 3 hours in 3 years
The EMSVO Certification
Pennsylvania is one of the few states with a dedicated Emergency Medical Services Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) certification. The EMSVO CE requirement is unique: 2 hours every 2 years OR 3 hours every 3 years, depending on your renewal cycle length.
If you hold an EMSVO certification alongside another EMS credential, you need to meet both sets of CE requirements separately.
NREMT and Pennsylvania Recertification
Pennsylvania does not require NREMT certification for state license renewal. You can recertify in Pennsylvania using state CE requirements alone.
If you choose to maintain NREMT certification, you will follow the NREMT recertification requirements separately. NREMT operates on its own cycle and uses the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) structure. Maintaining NREMT alongside your Pennsylvania cert offers portability if you ever work in another state, but it requires additional CE hours on top of Pennsylvania’s state requirements.
