Nebraska EMS Recertification Requirements

Hours, recertification paths, and EMS continuing education requirements for Nebraska EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

Nebraska EMS providers have two paths to renew their state license: maintain National Registry (NREMT) certification, or follow Nebraska state CE requirements. Nebraska is unusual: the state-only path requires only the National Component of the NREMT NCCP model, which is roughly half the total NREMT hour requirement. This makes Nebraska one of the lower-hour state recertification options available.

Compare Both Paths

Both Nebraska EMS continuing education paths are shown below side-by-side so you can compare hours at your certification level.

Which Nebraska Recertification Path Should You Choose?

Nebraska is one of the few states where the state-only path requires significantly fewer total hours than the NREMT path. The decision comes down to whether you need NREMT portability.

Choose the NREMT path if: You want the option to work as an EMS provider in another state, or you’re already maintaining NREMT for any reason. NREMT also makes it easier to transfer your certification if you move or work cross-state.

Choose the Nebraska state path if: You only work in Nebraska and want to minimize total CE hours. The state path saves you 20 to 30 hours per cycle at the higher certification levels.

Worth knowing: It is almost always easier to keep your NREMT current than to regain it after it lapses. If you can maintain NREMT, the portability is worth the extra hours.

About the Nebraska State Path

Nebraska’s state CE option requires only the National Component of the NREMT National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). The Local, State, and Individual components of NCCP are not required by Nebraska. This is what makes the state path’s hour totals significantly lower than the full NREMT path.

The National Component covers core EMS topics tied to each provider level. If you’re following the Nebraska state path, your CE selection should align with the National Component topics for your certification level.

Nebraska EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does Nebraska accept?

Nebraska accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education from approved providers. Make sure your CE is from a CAPCE-accredited provider. CE Solutions is CAPCE-accredited, and our courses are accepted by the Nebraska EMS Program for both the NREMT path and the Nebraska state path.

Does Nebraska require NREMT certification?

No. Nebraska offers both an NREMT path and a state-only recertification path. The Nebraska state path requires only the National Component of NCCP, which is roughly half the full NREMT hour requirement.

How many CE hours do I need for Nebraska recertification?

NREMT path: 16 hours for EMR, 40 for EMT, 50 for AEMT, 60 for Paramedic. Nebraska state path: 8 hours for EMR, 20 for EMT, 25 for AEMT, 30 for Paramedic.

Why does Nebraska’s state path require fewer hours than NREMT?

Nebraska only requires the National Component of the NREMT NCCP model, not the full NREMT recertification path. The Local, State, and Individual components of NCCP are waived by Nebraska, which is why the state path’s hour totals are significantly lower than the full NREMT path.

What’s the easier way to recertify in Nebraska?

It is almost always easier to keep your NREMT current than to regain it after it lapses. That said, Nebraska’s state path requires fewer total hours. If you don’t need to work outside Nebraska, the state path can save you significant CE time. If you might work in another state at any point, maintain NREMT.
