How Many Hours Does a Paramedic Need
That depends on which credential you are renewing, and the answer is different for each.
National Registry: 60 hours
Paramedics renewing an NREMT certification need 60 hours under the National Continued Competency Program, split across three components. This number is the same in every state.
State license: it varies
Your state EMS office sets its own hour total, renewal window and mandatory topics. Some states accept the NCCP model outright. Others set entirely different numbers. Look up your state requirements before you buy anything.
Most working paramedics carry both and have to satisfy both. Meeting one does not meet the other.

Which Package Should a Paramedic Buy
Three questions sort it out.
- Are you renewing nationally, at the state level, or both?Most paramedics need both. They are separate requirements on separate clocks with different hour totals. The NREMT is 60 hours. Your state number is on our requirements by state page.
- Does your agency assign your state or local and individual hours?If yes, the 30 hour NCCP Core covers what is left. If no, the 60 hour program covers all three components in one place.
- Do you also carry a fire certification?If so, the Advanced state package includes firefighter and hazmat awareness CEUs alongside your EMS hours in the same account.
Not sure what your agency provides? Buy the 60 hour program. It costs $60 more than the Core package and removes the risk of finding out in March that nobody was assigning your local hours.
National and State Are Not the Same Requirement
Your National Registry certification runs on a two year cycle and requires 60 hours for paramedics, the same in every state. Your state paramedic license is a different thing entirely. It renews on its own schedule, often tied to your original license date, with its own hour total and its own mandatory topics. Some states accept the NCCP model outright. Others set their own numbers. A few require specific subjects such as pediatrics, airway or jurisprudence on top of the total.

Paramedic Recertification Questions
How many CE hours does a paramedic need to recertify?
It depends on which credential you are renewing. National Registry recertification takes 60 hours under the NCCP model, split into 30 national, 15 state or local, and 15 individual. Your state paramedic license is separate and the total is set by your state EMS office, so it varies. Check the requirements for your state and build to whichever is stricter.
How much does paramedic recertification cost?

Can I complete my hours online?
Distributive, meaning online, continuing education is accepted for National Registry recertification when it comes from an accredited provider. Skills verification is handled separately through your agency. Some states cap how much of their own requirement can be completed online, so check your state office if you are renewing both.
What is the difference between the 60 hour program and the 30 hour Core?
The 60 hour program is all-inclusive and covers national, state or local, and individual components. The 30 hour Core covers the national component only, and is meant for paramedics whose agency or medical director already assigns the other two. If you are unsure which applies to you, take the 60 hour program.
How long do I have to finish?
Packages are valid for one recertification period and expire either upon completion of the included hours or after one year, whichever comes first. Courses are self-paced. Sixty NREMT hours across a two year cycle works out to well under an hour a week.
Are these hours accepted by my state?
Our courses are CAPCE accredited, and most state offices accept CAPCE credit. Requirements vary, including mandatory topics some states add on top. Check the requirements for your state before you buy.
What happens if my paramedic certification expires?
Once a National Registry certification lapses you cannot simply add hours and renew. Depending on how long it has been expired, the path back may involve a reentry process or retesting. Contact the National Registry directly about your national certification, and your state office separately about your license.
