Need more than the national Core? The full 40-hour program costs $50 more and includes education for all three components. Check with your training officer about any required local topics before selecting your courses.
Is a 20-Hour EMT Refresher Enough to Recertify?
The 20-hour EMT refresher Core covers the national component of the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). EMTs renewing through continuing education need 40 total hours, divided across three components.
| NCCP component | Required hours |
|---|---|
| National | 20 |
| Local or state | 10 |
| Individual | 10 |
| Total | 40 |
If you already earned qualifying local and individual credits, the Core package may be all the additional education you need. If those hours are still outstanding, the 40-hour program provides a complete CE option. Review the National Registry NCCP requirements when planning your courses.
Course completion is one part of renewal. You must also submit your recertification application, pay applicable renewal fees, and satisfy any skills verification required for your certification status.
EMT Continuing Education On Your Schedule
Fit your refresher training around work, school, and life outside the ambulance. Our online courses are available around the clock, so you can choose when to study without arranging your week around a live class.
Read course materials or watch video-based lessons, then complete the course exam. After you pass, your certificate is available to download and remains in your account history. That makes it easier to keep track of completed education and gather your records for renewal.
CE Solutions has provided EMS continuing education since 1997. Learn about our CAPCE accreditation and state acceptance , or compare NREMT recertification packages for other certification levels.
How to Complete Your Online EMT Refresher
- Review your existing credits. Identify the NCCP components you still need and any education assigned by your state or agency.
- Register for your package. Choose the 20-hour EMT Core or 40-hour NREMT EMT recertification program.
- Work through your courses. Follow the course categories in your account, study the materials, and pass each course exam.
- Keep your completion records. Download your certificates and check your hours before submitting your renewal application.
Using EMT Refresher Hours for State Renewal
Your state EMT credential may have different renewal dates, hour totals, and required subjects. Confirm your state EMS recertification requirements before deciding which package fits your renewal pathway.
Maintaining your National Registry certification does not automatically renew your state credential. If you are renewing through a state CE pathway, review our state EMS continuing education packages and plan for any additional state requirements.
EMT Refresher Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take an EMT refresher course online?
Yes. Both CE Solutions packages use self-paced online courses. The National Registry accepts qualifying online continuing education without an online-hour limit. State renewal rules and any required skills verification still apply.
What is the difference between the 20-hour and 40-hour EMT packages?
The 20-hour Core covers only the NCCP national component. The 40-hour program includes the national component plus local or state and individual hours. Choose based on the credits you already have and the components you still need.
How much does an EMT refresher cost?
The 20-hour EMT Refresher Core is $169. The 40-hour NREMT EMT recertification program is $219. These are course-package prices; National Registry and state renewal fees are separate.
Are these EMT courses accepted by the NREMT?
Yes. Our EMS courses are CAPCE accredited, which is an accepted education source for National Registry recertification. Your courses must meet the applicable component and topic requirements for your current renewal cycle.
How long do I have to complete my EMT refresher?
Your access covers one recertification period and ends when you finish the included hours or after one year, whichever comes first. Complete your education before your credential's deadline if that date comes sooner.
Will this course qualify me to become an EMT?
These packages are continuing education for existing EMS professionals. If you are seeking your first EMT certification, you need an initial EMT education program and must meet the applicable examination and state requirements.
Is an EMT refresher the same as NREMT remedial training?
Remedial training and routine recertification serve different purposes. If you need education after unsuccessful exam attempts or to regain an expired credential, confirm your requirements before buying a refresher package. Contact CE Solutions for help choosing the appropriate program.
