New Mexico EMS Recertification Requirements

Hours, category breakdowns, and EMS continuing education requirements for New Mexico First Responders, EMTs, EMT Intermediates, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

New Mexico EMS providers have two paths to renew their state license: maintain National Registry (NREMT) certification, or follow New Mexico state CE requirements. New Mexico is distinct in two important ways: the state path requires at least half of your CE hours to be completed synchronously (in-person, live webinar, or other real-time instructor-led format), and CE hours are distributed across six specific categories with mandatory pediatric content. For the official requirements, see the New Mexico EMS Bureau Continuing Education and Renewal Guide.

The New Mexico 50/50 Synchronous Rule

CRITICAL NEW MEXICO RULE
At Least Half of Your CE Must Be Synchronous

New Mexico requires that at least 50% of your CE hours be completed synchronously: in-person classroom instruction, live webinar, or other real-time instructor-led format. Self-paced online courses (F3) can only count toward the remaining half of your requirement.

CE Solutions offers F3 self-paced courses that can cover up to half of your New Mexico state path requirement. The other half must be completed through in-person training or live virtual instructor-led (VILT/F5) courses through another approved New Mexico provider.

New Mexico CE Category Distribution

Every New Mexico EMS provider must distribute their CE hours across six required categories. The hours per category increase with certification level. Pediatric content is required as a portion of Special Considerations.

Category First Responder EMT EMT-I Paramedic
Preparatory / Operations 2 4 4 6
Airway, Respiration & Ventilation 3 6 8 8
Cardiovascular 2 6 6 10
Medical 4 8 12 14
Trauma 4 8 10 10

The Simplest Way to Recertify in New Mexico: NREMT

For most New Mexico EMS providers, the simplest path is completing NREMT recertification. NREMT requirements can be fully completed through CAPCE-accredited online courses with no synchronous requirement, and meeting NREMT also satisfies most of New Mexico’s state CE category requirements.

If you choose the New Mexico state path, CE Solutions can cover up to half of your required CE hours through F3 self-paced courses. The remaining synchronous portion must be completed through approved in-person or VILT/F5 courses from another New Mexico provider.

Our NREMT recertification packages bundle the required hours and topics for each New Mexico provider level. Every course is CAPCE-accredited and accepted by the New Mexico EMS Bureau through the NREMT pathway.

Worth knowing: It is almost always easier to keep your NREMT current than to regain it after it lapses. Going the NREMT route also avoids the New Mexico state path’s synchronous requirement entirely.

New Mexico Background Check Requirement

New Mexico requires a state criminal background check every other renewal cycle (every 4 years). The schedule alternates by last name: providers with last names N-Z renew background checks on 2026 and 2027 cycles, while A-M renew on 2028 and 2029 cycles. This is a DPS form submission, not an IdentoGo fingerprinting requirement.

NREMT and New Mexico Recertification

New Mexico does not require NREMT certification for state license renewal. You can recertify in New Mexico using state CE requirements alone.

If you choose to maintain NREMT certification, you will follow the NREMT recertification requirements separately. NREMT operates on its own cycle and uses the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) structure. For complete details on NREMT recertification by level, visit the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians website.

Maintaining NREMT alongside your New Mexico cert offers portability if you ever work in another state. Meeting New Mexico’s state CE requirements typically also covers most of the NREMT NCCP requirements.

New Mexico EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does New Mexico accept?

New Mexico accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education and New Mexico EMS Bureau-approved courses. Make sure your CE is from a CAPCE-accredited provider. CE Solutions is CAPCE-accredited, and our courses are accepted by the New Mexico EMS Bureau for the NREMT pathway and as part of the state path (up to 50% of total hours).

Does New Mexico require NREMT certification?

No. New Mexico offers both an NREMT path and a state-only recertification path. The NREMT path is simpler because it doesn’t have the 50% synchronous requirement that applies to the state path.

How many CE hours do I need for New Mexico recertification?

New Mexico requires 20 hours for First Responder, 40 hours for EMT, 50 hours for EMT Intermediate, and 60 hours for Paramedic. These hours must be distributed across six required categories with pediatric content as part of Special Considerations.

What is the New Mexico 50/50 synchronous rule?

At least half of your CE hours must be completed synchronously: in-person classroom, live webinar, or other real-time instructor-led format. Self-paced online courses (F3) can only count toward the remaining half of your requirement. The NREMT pathway does not have this restriction.

Can CE Solutions cover all of my New Mexico state path requirements?

Up to half. CE Solutions offers F3 self-paced courses that can satisfy up to 50% of your New Mexico state path hour requirement. The other half must be completed through in-person training or VILT (live virtual instructor-led) courses from another approved New Mexico provider. Alternatively, you can complete the full NREMT pathway through CE Solutions, which satisfies New Mexico through the NREMT route.

When is my New Mexico EMS renewal deadline?

All CE requirements must be completed by March 31 of your renewal year. This is the same deadline as National Registry, making it easier to align if you maintain both certifications.

Do I need a background check for New Mexico EMS renewal?

Yes, every other renewal cycle (every 4 years). The schedule alternates by last name: providers with last names N-Z renew background checks on 2026 and 2027 cycles, while A-M renew on 2028 and 2029 cycles. This is a DPS form submission, not an IdentoGo fingerprinting requirement.

Where do I submit my New Mexico EMS renewal?

New Mexico EMS renewals are processed through the New Mexico EMS Bureau Licensing Portal. Contact the EMS Bureau at (505) 476-8200 for application instructions, status questions, or licensure inquiries. The complete renewal requirements are also detailed in the New Mexico EMS Bureau Continuing Education and Renewal Guide.
