Minnesota EMS Recertification Requirements

Hours, recertification paths, and EMS continuing education requirements for Minnesota EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

Minnesota EMS providers have two pathways to renew their state license: maintain National Registry (NREMT) certification, or follow Minnesota state CE requirements. Minnesota is unusual in that the state CE option does not have specific course requirements, and EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics all complete the same 48-hour total regardless of certification level.

Which Minnesota Recertification Path Should You Choose?

Minnesota’s path comparison is unique. The state path requires the same 48 hours regardless of whether you’re an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic. This means EMTs do MORE hours on the state path, while Paramedics do FAR fewer hours on the state path.

Choose the NREMT path if: You’re an EMT or want NREMT portability across state lines. NREMT also offers the simplest renewal process with clear NCCP topic structure.

Choose the Minnesota state path if: You’re an AEMT or Paramedic and don’t need NREMT portability. The state path saves Paramedics 12 hours per cycle and gives complete flexibility on what CE topics you complete.

Worth knowing: It is almost always easier to keep your NREMT current than to regain it after it lapses. If you can maintain NREMT, the portability is worth considering even when state hours are lower.

About the Minnesota State Path

Minnesota’s state CE option is unusual: there is no specific course requirement, no category distribution, and no mandatory topic list. You just need to complete the required 48 hours of CE in any combination that meets your professional development needs. This gives Minnesota EMS providers significant flexibility in how they structure their continuing education.

This flexibility is a real advantage. Unlike states with strict topic distribution (like Georgia or Illinois), Minnesota lets you focus on the topics most relevant to your practice setting.

Minnesota EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does Minnesota accept?

Minnesota accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education from approved providers. Make sure your CE is from a CAPCE-accredited provider. CE Solutions is CAPCE-accredited, and our courses are accepted by the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board for both the NREMT path and the Minnesota state path.

Does Minnesota require NREMT certification?

No. Minnesota offers both an NREMT path and a state-only recertification path. Many Minnesota EMS providers maintain NREMT for portability across state lines, but it’s not required.

How many CE hours do I need for Minnesota recertification?

NREMT path: 16 hours for EMR, 40 for EMT, 50 for AEMT, 60 for Paramedic. Minnesota state path: 48 hours for EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic (same total at all three levels). For EMR state path requirements, contact the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board directly.

Why is Minnesota’s state path 48 hours for everyone?

Minnesota structures its state CE option as a flat 48-hour requirement across EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic levels, rather than scaling hours by certification level. This gives Paramedics a significantly lower hour total than NREMT (48 vs 60), while EMTs complete more hours on the state path than NREMT (48 vs 40).

Are there required topics on the Minnesota state path?

No. Minnesota’s state CE option does not have specific course requirements, category distribution, or mandatory topic lists. You can complete your 48 hours in any combination of CAPCE-accredited topics that meets your professional development needs.

What’s the simplest way to recertify in Minnesota?

For EMTs, NREMT path requires fewer hours (40 vs 48) and gives you portability. For AEMTs and Paramedics, the Minnesota state path requires fewer hours. Choose based on whether you need NREMT portability and which hour total works better for you.
