Maryland EMS Recertification Requirements

Updated pathways, operational program affiliation, and EMS continuing education requirements for Maryland EMRs, EMTs, CRTs, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

Maryland EMS recertification works through the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS). Maryland recently updated its renewal requirements, and providers now have two clearly defined pathways. Both pathways require operational program affiliation AND completion of the three most recent years of Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates. For the official Maryland EMS renewal information, visit the MIEMSS renewal certification page.

Maryland EMS Renewal Cycles by Certification Level

Maryland renewal cycles differ depending on your certification level. Plan your EMS continuing education and renewal submission around your specific cycle.

Paramedic

Note: EMRs and EMTs renew every 3 years. CRTs and Paramedics renew every 2 years. All renewal requirements must be completed and submitted to MIEMSS before your expiration date.

Two Recertification Pathways

Maryland EMS providers now have two clearly defined pathways for recertification. Both pathways require operational program affiliation and Annual Protocol Updates.

Pathway A · Simpler
National Registry Route
Maintain active NREMT status as an EMT or higher level. Most streamlined path for Maryland recertification.
✓ Current active NREMT
Status as EMT or higher
✓ 3 Most Recent Years
Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates
✓ Operational Program Affiliation
MIEMSS-approved EMS operational program
Pathway B · Maryland CE
Continuing Education Route
24 hours of CE in MIEMSS-designated categories, plus protocol updates and operational program affiliation.
✓ 24 Hours CE
In State EMS Medical Director categories
✓ 3 Most Recent Years
Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates
✓ Operational Program Affiliation
MIEMSS-approved EMS operational program

Pathway B: Required CE Categories

The Maryland Continuing Education Route requires 15 hours distributed across specific categories designated by the State EMS Medical Director. The remaining 9 hours offer flexibility through skills verification and additional MIEMSS-approved content.

Airway / Ventilation / Respiratory
3 hrs
Cardiovascular
3 hrs
Medical
2 hrs
OB/GYN
1 hr
Pediatrics
2 hrs
Toxicology / Environmental
1 hr
Trauma / Burns
3 hrs
Required Total
15 hrs
Remaining 9 Hours: Flexible Content Options

1 to 9 hours of your 24 CE may be substituted with technical skills (MIEMSS-approved hands-on technical proficiency verification, completed through your Maryland State EMS Operational Program or BLS program).

Remaining hours may be fulfilled through MIEMSS-approved local content, individual educational content, or any other MIEMSS-approved continuing education (including additional skills).

Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates

REQUIRED FOR BOTH PATHWAYS
3 Most Recent Years of Annual Protocol Updates

Both pathways require completion of the three most recent years of Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates for EMS. These are specific MIEMSS courses, not general continuing education.

Important: Time spent on Annual EMS Protocol Updates does NOT count toward your 24-hour continuing education requirement on Pathway B. These hours are tracked separately.

EMS Operational Program Affiliation

EXPLICITLY REQUIRED FOR RENEWAL
MIEMSS-Approved Operational Program Affiliation

Maryland now explicitly requires affiliation with a MIEMSS-approved EMS operational program as a renewal requirement (not just verification). This applies to both Pathway A and Pathway B.

Contact your operational program coordinator to confirm your affiliation status before submitting your renewal application.

The Simplest Way to Recertify in Maryland: NREMT

For most Maryland EMS providers, the National Registry Route is the simplest pathway to Maryland recertification. Maintaining NREMT eliminates the need to track Pathway B’s specific category hour requirements (Airway, Cardiovascular, Medical, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Toxicology, Trauma).

Note: Both pathways still require completing the three most recent years of Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates and maintaining operational program affiliation. CE Solutions handles the NREMT hour requirement; the Protocol Updates and affiliation are completed through MIEMSS and your operational program.

Maryland EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does Maryland accept?

Maryland accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education from approved providers through the NREMT pathway. The MIEMSS state path (Pathway B) requires MIEMSS-approved CE in specific category distributions. CE Solutions is CAPCE-accredited and our courses are accepted for Maryland recertification via the NREMT route.

Does Maryland require NREMT certification?

No, but Maryland accepts active NREMT certification (EMT or higher level) as the simpler of the two recertification pathways. For most Maryland EMS providers, maintaining NREMT is the most efficient way to recertify.

How long are Maryland EMS certification cycles?

Maryland renewal cycles differ by certification level. EMR and EMT certifications are valid for 3 years. CRT and Paramedic certifications are valid for 2 years. All renewal requirements must be completed and submitted to MIEMSS before your expiration date.

What are Maryland’s CE hour requirements?

Pathway A (NREMT): Maintain current active NREMT status. Pathway B (CE Route): 24 hours of continuing education distributed across specific categories: 3 hours Airway/Ventilation/Respiratory, 3 hours Cardiovascular, 2 hours Medical, 1 hour OB/GYN, 2 hours Pediatrics, 1 hour Toxicology/Environmental, 3 hours Trauma/Burns (15 hours required), plus 9 additional hours through skills, local content, or other MIEMSS-approved CE.

What are the Annual Protocol Updates?

Both pathways require completion of the three most recent years of Annual Maryland Medical Protocol Updates for EMS. These are specific MIEMSS courses, not general continuing education. Time spent on Annual Protocol Updates does NOT count toward Pathway B’s 24-hour CE requirement.

Do I need to maintain operational program affiliation?

Yes. Maryland now explicitly requires affiliation with a MIEMSS-approved EMS operational program as a renewal requirement (not just verification). This applies to both pathways.

What’s the simplest way to recertify in Maryland?

For most Maryland EMS providers, Pathway A (NREMT Route) is the simplest path. Maintain your NREMT certification through CAPCE-accredited online CE, complete the Annual Protocol Updates through MIEMSS, and confirm your operational program affiliation. CE Solutions handles the NREMT hour requirement portion.
