Iowa EMS Recertification Requirements

Hours, recertification paths, and EMS continuing education requirements for Iowa EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

Iowa EMS providers have two paths to renew their state license: maintain National Registry (NREMT) certification, or follow Iowa state CE requirements. Iowa is unique in that the state-only path actually requires fewer total hours than NREMT. The decision comes down to whether you want NREMT portability or prefer the minimum-hours route.

Compare Both Paths

Both paths are shown below side-by-side so you can compare hours at your certification level.

Use the table below to quickly see how many CE hours you need based on your certification level and chosen path.

Certification Level NREMT Path State Path Hour Savings on State
EMR 16 hrs 8 hrs 8 hours fewer
EMT 40 hrs 20 hrs 20 hours fewer
AEMT 50 hrs 25 hrs 25 hours fewer
Paramedic 60 hrs 30 hrs 30 hours fewer

Which Path Should You Choose?

Iowa is unusual: the state path requires about half as many hours as the NREMT path. Most other states require more hours on the state path, but Iowa flips that math. That makes the decision less about CE workload and more about portability.

Choose the NREMT path if: You want the option to work as an EMS provider in another state, or you’re already keeping NREMT current for any reason.

Choose the Iowa state path if: You have no interest in working outside Iowa and want to minimize total CE hours. The state path saves you 20 to 30 hours per cycle at the higher certification levels.

Worth knowing: Even with the lower hour requirement, the state path still requires CAPCE-accredited or state-approved CE. Make sure your courses come from an approved provider regardless of which path you choose.

About the Iowa State Path

The State of Iowa publishes a recommended course list for continuing education topics on the state path. While the recommended list isn’t strictly enforced topic-by-topic, following it ensures your CE aligns with what Iowa expects EMS providers to maintain competence in.

Iowa EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does Iowa accept?

Iowa accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education from approved providers. NREMT path courses follow the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) structure. State path courses should align with Iowa’s recommended course list for continuing education topics.

Does Iowa require NREMT certification?

No. Iowa offers both an NREMT path and a state-only recertification path. The Iowa state path actually requires fewer total hours than NREMT.

How many CE hours do I need for Iowa recertification?

NREMT path: 16 hours for EMR, 40 for EMT, 50 for AEMT, 60 for Paramedic. Iowa state path: 8 hours for EMR, 20 for EMT, 25 for AEMT, 30 for Paramedic.

Why does Iowa’s state path require fewer hours than NREMT?

Each state sets its own EMS recertification requirements independently. Iowa has chosen lower CE hour totals for its state-only path compared to NREMT’s National Continued Competency Program structure. This makes Iowa one of the easier states to recertify in if you don’t need NREMT portability.

Where can I find Iowa’s recommended CE course list?

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services publishes a recommended course list for state path CE topics. You can review the full list in the Iowa HHS continuing education topics document.
