Indiana EMS Recertification Requirements

Hours, recertification paths, and EMS continuing education requirements for Indiana EMRs, EMTs, AEMTs, and Paramedics

Important Notice: The information on this page is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered legal, regulatory, or professional advice. EMS recertification requirements vary by state and can change at any time. All EMS providers are responsible for verifying their specific certification, recertification, and continuing education requirements directly with their state EMS regulatory authority before relying on any information published here.

Indiana EMS providers have two paths to renew their state license: maintain National Registry (NREMT) certification, or follow Indiana state CE requirements. Hour requirements differ between the two paths at higher certification levels, with the state path requiring more total hours for AEMTs and Paramedics.

The Simplest Way to Recertify in Indiana: NREMT

For most Indiana EMS providers above the EMT level, maintaining NREMT certification is the simplest path to recertification. NREMT requires fewer total hours for AEMTs and Paramedics (50 vs 54 for AEMT, 60 vs 72 for Paramedic), and can be completed entirely through CAPCE-accredited online EMS continuing education.

The state path makes sense for providers who have no interest in maintaining NREMT, or who let their NREMT lapse. EMT-level providers see the same hour total on either path (40 hours), so the choice comes down to whether you want NREMT portability.

Indiana EMS Recertification FAQs

What EMS continuing education does Indiana accept?

Indiana accepts CAPCE-accredited EMS continuing education from approved providers. NREMT path courses follow the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) structure. State path courses are accepted as long as they’re from CAPCE-accredited providers.

Does Indiana require NREMT certification?

No. Indiana offers both an NREMT path and a state-only recertification path. NREMT is typically simpler at the AEMT and Paramedic levels because the state path requires more total hours.

How many CE hours do I need for Indiana recertification?

NREMT path: 16 hours for EMR, 40 for EMT, 50 for AEMT, 60 for Paramedic. State path: 20 hours for EMR, 40 for EMT, 54 for AEMT, 72 for Paramedic.

What’s the difference in hours between the NREMT and state paths?

For EMTs, both paths require 40 hours. For AEMTs, NREMT requires 50 hours while the state path requires 54 hours. For Paramedics, NREMT requires 60 hours while the state path requires 72 hours. Higher-level providers save more time by going the NREMT route.

What’s the simplest way to recertify in Indiana?

Maintain NREMT certification and complete your recertification through CAPCE-accredited online CE. This works for both NREMT and Indiana state license renewal, and saves time for AEMTs and Paramedics.

Where do I submit my Indiana EMS renewal?

Indiana EMS renewals are processed through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security EMS Branch. Contact them directly for application instructions, status questions, or licensure inquiries.
